GLOBE: A MODEL OF THE EARTH
What is Globe?
The globe is the miniature model of the Earth. It shows where and how the various land masses exist and where are rivers and oceans.
What is Axis?
The imaginary line passing from one point of anchor to the other is known as the axis of the Earth.
What is Equator?
The Equator is an imaginary line which runs in the middle of the globe around the widest part. It divides the Earth horizontally into two hemispheres - the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. Both the hemispheres are equal in size.
What are Latitudes?
Latitudes are imaginary lines running parallel to the equator around the globe.
Some important Latitudes: There are some important latitudes which help us divide the Earth into zones. These are -
1) 0 degree latitude is known as Equator.
2) 23 1/2 degree N is known as Tropic of Cancer.
3)23 1/2 degree S is known as Tropic of Capricorn.
4) 66 1/2 degree N is known as Arctic Circle.
5) 66 1/2 degree S is known as Antarctic Circle.
What is Torrid Zone?
The zone between the Tropics is called Torrid Zone. Thus the zone between 23 1/2 degree N and 23 1/2 degree S is known as torrid zone of the Earth.
What are Temperate Zones?
The region between the Tropic of Cancer (23 1/2 degree N) and Arctic Circle (66 1/2 degree N) in the Northern Hemisphere and Tropic of Capricorn (23 1/2 degree S) and Antarctic Circle (66 1/2 degree S) in the Southern Hemisphere is known as Temperate Zones.
What is Frigid Zone?
The region between the Arctic Circle (66 1/2 degree N) and the North Pole in the Northern Hemisphere and Antarctic Circle (66 1/2 degree S ) and South Pole in Southern Hemisphere are known as Frigid zones.
What are longitudes?
Longitudes are imaginary lines which run from the North Pole to the South Pole. They are also known as meridians.
What are the comparison between latitudes and longitudes?
The comparison between the latitudes and longitudes are as follows -
What is Prime Meridian?
Prime Meridian is the longitude which passes through Greenwich near London and is considered to be as 0 degree.
What is International Date Line?
An s: The longitude which runs on the opposite side of the Prime Meridian on the globe is considered to be the International Date Line.
What is Indian Standard Time? The Indian Standard Time is based on the 82 1/2 degree East Meridian and thus is +5 1/2 hours from the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
Choose the correct option:
1) An imaginary line which run in the middle of the globe and divides the Earth horizontally into two hemisphere is
I) prime meridian. ii)Equator III)tropic of cancer. Iv) tropic of Capricorn.
