Birubala Rabha
Birubala Rabha was a social reformer and activist . She belongs to Assam, India.
Birubala Rabha was born Thakurvila village near the Meghalaya border in Assam's Goalpara district on February 5, 1949.
Awards:
Birubala Rabha received various awards and accolades for her efforts against witch hunting in Assam. Rabha was also nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by the Northeast Network. In 2015 , she was granted an honorary doctorate degree by Gauhati University.
Her contribution:
✊ Birubala Rabha was known for her untiring campaign against witch hunting in Assam.
✊ established the Thakurvila Mahila Samity , a women's association. Its aim is to raise awareness about social issues, such as witch hunting in her village.
✊ Later , she joined the Assam Mahila Samata Society.
✊ In 2011 , she founded Mission Birubala, a non - profit organisation comprising social activists, survivors and lawyers. The objective of this organisation was to educate and raise awareness about witch hunting , as well as support and safeguard survivors and potential victims across Assam.
✊ She organise awareness camps and teach school lessons. She rescued over 35 women branded as witches in the last decade of her life.
✊ Her activism led to the passing of the Assam Witch Hunting ( Prohibition Preservation and Protection) Act in 2015. This act came into effect in 2018. This law is considered India's toughest anti - Witch - hunting law.
