Introduction

Daily current affairs are essential for candidates preparing for APSC, ADRE, SSC, RRB NTPC, Banking, CTET, CUET-PG and UGC NET examinations. Government schemes, defence developments, scientific research, economic policies and important national events frequently feature in competitive examinations.

This article covers important developments reported on 16 October 2026, with special attention to government announcements and news relevant to Assam and the Northeast.

1. First-Ever Kanda Express to Reach Agartala

The Department of Consumer Affairs has arranged the first-ever Kanda Express movement to Agartala, Tripura, to improve onion availability and help maintain affordable prices during the festive season. The consignment, carrying approximately 440 metric tonnes of onions, is expected to reach Agartala on 18 October 2026.

The initiative distributes onion stocks maintained under the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF). The government uses buffer stocks to supplement market supplies and moderate excessive price fluctuations.

According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, more than 2,800 metric tonnes of buffer onions have been dispatched across the Northeast through two Kanda Express rail consignments and 44 truck consignments.

This development is important for the Northeast because transportation costs, geographical challenges and supply-chain constraints can affect the availability and prices of essential commodities.

Important exam facts:

  • Destination: Agartala, Tripura
  • Expected arrival: 18 October 2026
  • Quantity: Approximately 440 metric tonnes

4. Indian Scientists Identify Martian Analogue Sites

Indian scientists have identified terrestrial locations with geological similarities to Mars, helping researchers understand the planet's mineral composition and evidence of past water activity.

Researchers from the University of Kerala identified melanterite at Neyveli in Tamil Nadu and gypsum at the Atacama Desert in Chile and the Tiruchirappalli Badlands in Tamil Nadu. These minerals are hydrous sulphates that can preserve evidence of water-rock interactions.

Gypsum may provide clues about past aqueous environments, while melanterite can indicate short-lived wet, acidic and oxidising conditions. Studying such minerals on Earth can help scientists interpret observations from Mars and identify locations of interest for future planetary exploration.

The research demonstrates the importance of laboratory analysis and terrestrial analogue sites in planetary science.

Important exam facts:

  • Research institution: University of Kerala
  • Important minerals: Melanterite and gypsum
  • Indian locations: Neyveli and Tiruchirappalli Badlands, Tamil Nadu
  • International location: Atacama Desert, Chile
