Verghese Kurien
Verghese Kurien was one of the most important figures in India's dairy development. He is widely known as the “Father of the White Revolution in India” and played a central role in transforming India from a milk-deficient country into one of the world's major milk producers.
His work demonstrated how cooperative institutions, modern technology and professional management could be combined to improve the economic condition of rural farmers.
Early Life
Verghese Kurien was born on 26 November 1921 in Kozhikode, Kerala, then known as Calicut.
He studied at the University of Madras and later went to the United States, where he studied at Michigan State University.
He obtained a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, with a specialisation in areas related to dairy engineering.
Beginning of His Dairy Career
In 1949, Kurien joined the government dairy project at Anand, Gujarat, as part of his professional assignment.
Anand later became the centre of India's dairy cooperative movement.
There he worked with Tribhuvandas K. Patel, who had established a cooperative movement among milk producers.
Kurien helped transform the cooperative into a professionally managed dairy organisation that later became closely associated with the Amul brand.
Amul and the Cooperative Movement
The Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union Limited, popularly known as Amul, became an important model of cooperative dairy development.
Under Kurien's leadership, the organisation developed modern systems for:
Milk collection
Processing
Marketing
Distribution
Dairy-product production
The cooperative structure allowed milk producers to become direct participants in the dairy business.
White Revolution
Kurien's most significant contribution was his leadership in India's White Revolution.
The White Revolution refers to the rapid growth of milk production and the development of India's dairy sector.
Kurien believed that increasing milk production alone was not sufficient. Farmers also needed an efficient cooperative system that could provide them with a reliable market and better returns.
Operation Flood
Kurien played a central role in Operation Flood, launched in 1970 by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
Operation Flood became one of the world's largest dairy development programmes.
Its objectives included:
Increasing milk production
Linking milk producers with urban markets
Strengthening dairy cooperatives
Improving farmers' incomes
Developing milk-processing and distribution infrastructure
The programme helped establish a nationwide dairy cooperative network.
National Dairy Development Board
The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) was established in 1965 at Anand, Gujarat.
Kurien served as its founding chairman and remained associated with the organisation for several decades.
The NDDB became a major institution in India's dairy development and played a central role in implementing Operation Flood.
