Part 27 — Dhirubhai Ambani

Dhirubhai Ambani

Dhirubhai Ambani, whose full name was Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, was one of India's most influential entrepreneurs. He was the founder and chairman of Reliance Industries and played a major role in transforming India's private corporate sector and expanding participation in the capital market.

Early Life

Dhirubhai Ambani was born on 28 December 1932 in Chorwad, Gujarat, then part of the princely state of Junagadh.

He came from a modest background and developed an interest in business at an early age. After spending some years abroad, he returned to India in 1957 and began a yarn-trading business in Mumbai.

Foundation of Reliance

Dhirubhai started his entrepreneurial journey on a small scale and gradually expanded into textiles and other industries.

The Reliance Commercial Corporation was established in the 1950s and later developed into the Reliance business empire. His strategy emphasised large-scale manufacturing, integration of different stages of production and access to capital markets.

Reliance's 1977 public issue was particularly significant. The issue was reportedly oversubscribed seven times and brought a large number of ordinary Indian investors into the equity market.

Because of this transformation in the relationship between Indian companies and small investors, Dhirubhai Ambani is often described as an important architect of India's capital-market expansion.

Expansion of Reliance

Under Dhirubhai's leadership, Reliance expanded from textiles into petrochemicals and related industries.

Important developments included:

1957 — Returned to India and started yarn trading in Mumbai.

1977 — Reliance Textile Industries' IPO.

1980–82 — Development of petrochemical and polyester facilities at Patalganga.

1991 — Reliance commissioned its Hazira plant.

2000 — Reliance commissioned the Jamnagar refinery and petrochemical complex.

Contribution to Indian Business

Dhirubhai's business philosophy focused on large-scale production, technological development, vertical integration and mobilisation of investment from ordinary citizens.

His entrepreneurial success inspired a generation of Indian entrepreneurs and contributed to the growth of India's private-sector business environment. Reliance describes him as a visionary who sought to make the company an important part of India's economic development.
