Mary Kom, popularly known as “Magnificent Mary,” is one of India's most successful boxers. She made history through her achievements in women's amateur boxing and became the first Indian female boxer to win an Olympic medal.

Early Life


Mary Kom was born on 24 November 1982 in Kangathei village of Manipur.


She grew up in a farming family and developed an interest in athletics and sports during her childhood.


Initially, she participated in sports such as athletics and football. Her interest in boxing developed after she was inspired by the achievements of Manipuri boxer Dingko Singh, who won a gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games.


Beginning of Boxing Career


Mary Kom began training seriously in boxing in the late 1990s.


She trained under coaches in Manipur and gradually established herself as a promising young boxer.


Her determination and disciplined training helped her enter national-level competitions.
