What is avian influenza?


Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a vital infection that a primarily affects birds. However, certain subtypes of the virus can infect humans , leading to severe respiratory illness.

The most notable of the subtype is H5N1, which has been responsible for numerous human infections and fatalities in the past.


Avian influenza is a zoonotic disease ( meaning it can spread from animals to humans).





Symptoms of avian influenza: 

Symptoms of avian influenza include : 

a) fever 

b) cough 

c) sore throat 

d) muscle aches 

e) severe respiratory distress in advanced cases.




WHO responds to tackle with avian influenza:


The WHO has emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection.

WHO provided some key recommendations , include -

a) avoiding contact with  sick or dead birds.

b) ensuring poultry products are thoroughly cooked. 

c) implementing robust surveillance systems to detect and respond to new cases promptly.
