 1. State the reasons why man settles down permanently for agriculture.

Ans: The reasons for why man settles down permanently for agriculture are:

a) to plough the land and sow seeds.

b) to store the harvest for future use.

c) Man started settling down by the side of rivers since water water was necessary for agriculture.

d) Man started building houses to protect themselves from the sun, wind, rain and various wild animals.

2. What are two types of settlement?

Ans: Two types of settlement are:

a) Rural settlement and 

b) Urban settlement.


3. Why does man select places by the sides of rivers for permanent settlement?

Ans: Man select places by the side of rivers because water  is necessary for both man and agriculture.


4. What is Nucleated settlement?

Ans: In certain areas, people live in cluster due to availability of various facilities. Such type of settlement is called a Nucleated settlement.










5. What is sparse settlement?

Ans: In certain areas, due to various disadvantages in the hilly areas and also unfavorable climatic conditions, infertile soils, problems of transport in the plain areas , the settlement may be of dispersed types. This settlement is called as sparse settlement.





6.What is linear settlement?

Ans: In some settlement the houses are located along a road. Such settlement is called a linear settlement.



7. What is Star pattern settlement?

Ans: Where several road converge, a star shaped settlement develops. Such type of  settlement  is called as Star pattern settlement.



8. What is square pattern of settlement?

Ans: Square pattern of settlement develops around the agricultural fields in villages.



9. Write the characteristics of Rural settlement?

Ans: 

a) Main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture.

b) Settlement is thin and dispersed.

c) Houses are of traditional type.

d) Transport system is not convenient.

e) Fewer number of vehicles.

f) Lesser number of institutions.

g) Less scope for Trade and commerce.


10) What are the characteristics of urban Settlement?

Ans: 

a) Main occupations of the inhabitants are trade and commerce, industry and service.

b) Settlement is dense and clustered.

c) Houses are built of modern design, most of which are tall buildings.

d) Better transport network.

e) Large number of vehicles and well connected with other places.

f) Institutions are many.

g) Better scope for Trade and commerce.
