 What are Archives?

Ans: Archives are the collection of historical records and documents, usually primary source of documents. They are original or unique documents. The example of  Archives relating to Modern India are the papers of government agencies at various levels. The records of East India Company provide a detailed report on trading conditions during the period of 1600- 1857.

Archives are basically categorised into four types. They are -

a) Central Government Archives 

b) State government archives

c) Records of intermediate and subordinate authorities

d) judicial records.
