Indian Constitution has borrowed different ideas from different constitutions. The framers of Indian Constitution has followed the ideas of various constitutions to make better of our constitution. Though our Constitution is the written longest constitution of the world, but it has been working for us with the dynamic situations of our country.

Here are the main sources of Indian Constitution explained below.
1. Government of India Act, 1935 : Indian constitution borrowed the ideas of federal scheme, office of governor, judiciary, public service commissions, emergency provisions, and administrative details etc. from the Govt. of India Act, 1935.
2.British Constitution: From British Constitution India borrowed parliamentary government, rule of law, legislative procedure, single citizenship, cabinet system, prerogative writs , parliamentary privileges and bicameralism.
3. US Constitution: From US Constitution India Borrowed fundamental rights, independence of judiciary, judicial review, impeachment of the president, removal of Supreme Court and High Courts judges, and post of Vice- president.
4.From Irish Constitution: From Irish constitution the framers of Indian constitution borrowed different ideas. Some such ideas that the framers have adopted are directive principles of state policy, nomination of members to Rajya Sabha and the method of election of President.
5. From Canadian Constitution: The framers of the Indian Constitution has followed some provisions from the Canadian Constitution during the making of the constitution of India. Some such provisions are federation with a strong centre, vesting the residuary powers, in the centre, appointment of state governors by the centre, and advisory jurisdiction by the supreme court.
6. From Australian Constitution: The framers of the Indian Constitution has followed some sources from the Australian constitution during the framing of the constitution. Such sources are concurrent list, freedom of trade, commerce, and inter- course, and joint sitting of the two houses of parliament.
7. From Weimer constitution of Germany: The framers of Indian constitution borrowed the idea of suspension of fundamental rights during emergency from weimer constitution of Germany.
8. From Soviet Constitution: From Soviet constitution India borrowed Fundamental Duties and ideal of justice( social, economic and political) in the preamble from soviet constitution.
9.From French Constitution: From French constitution the framers of Indian constitution takes republic and the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity in the Preamble.
10. From South African Constitution: From South African constitution , the framers takes the idea of procedure for amendment of the constitution and elections of members of Rajya Sabha.
11. From Japanese Constitution: From Japanese constitution Indian framers takes the idea of procedure established by law.
