India's Independence is all about a lot of sacrifices and struggles. The Independent movement of India would not have been possible without the contribution of the great freedom fighters .Some of the freedom fighters are Rani Lakshmi Bai ,Subhash Chandra Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi ,Bhagat Singh, etc. Other than these freedom fighters ,there are a lot of other figures who have sacrificed their lives for the country's independence.
Role of Assamese freedom fighters in Indian freedom Movement: Assam came under the direct British domination after the Treaty of Yandaboo in 1826. Since then on ,many freedom - loving people of Assam belonging to both nobility and common masses began to feel the burning desire for freedom from the foreign domination.The first notable revolt against the British was led by Dhananjay Borgohain and Gumadhar Konwar in 1828, but they did not get much success.Gumadhar Konwar was sentenced to seven years in prison and Dhananjay Borgohain fled to Matak kingdom.
Gomdhar Kumar made the first such attempt.To regain the lost freedom of the motherland, he fought against the British along with Kandura Deka Phukan, Dharmadhar, Haranath and some other nobles.
Piyoli Borphukan took the lead and decided to attack the British with an attempt to burn down the British camp at rangpur. He was helped by Jiuram Dulia Barua,Benudhar Konwar , Rupchand Konwar ,Deuram Dihingia, Haranath and others. But their plan was destroyed.Piyoli and Jiuram were hanged and others deported for 14 years.
Revolt of 1857 and Assam:
The famous revolt of 1857, found an echo in Assam under the leadership of Maniram Dewan and piyoli Barua ,who were consequently hanged in 1858.Other leaders like Madhu Mullik ,Kamala Baruah,Dutiram Baruah , Marangi Khowa Gohain were banished from the state. Two others Formud Ali and Bahadur Gaon Burha were sent to the Andamans.
Role of Maniram Dewan: Maniram Devan met Madhu mallik in Calcutta and they together hatched a conspiracy to drive the British out of Assam. Bahadur Gaonburha, Phormud Ali , Piyoli Barua, Dutiram Barua ,Mayaram Nazir ect were some elites of Assam who responded to Maniram Dewan's appeal. They decided that Ahom Prince Kandarpeswar Singha would lead the soilders in Assam in revolt and Maniram Dewan would bring arms and weapons from Calcutta to help them . Unfortunately the attempt failed and immediately the British captured and imprisoned many of the rebels.
The Phulguri Uprising:
The Phulguri uprising which is also known as Phulguri Dhawa in Assamese was the first agrarian revolt in Assam after 1857.When the British government began to sell opium people were naturally infuriated.In 1861, the British government completely banned the cultivation of Poppy.Again the government imposed tax on Tamul - paan. With these dissatisfaction, people of Phulguri revolted against the British government.
The Peasant revolt of Rangia:
On 24th December 1893 the peasant revolt begun with the looting and vandalizing of the Rangia bazaar. The peasants of Rangia felt that the presence of the Marwaris had led to the increase in land revenue. So they started humiliated the Tehsildaar of Rangia and Tamulpur,Radhanath Barua . They also destroyed shops, houses etc of Rangia Haat. They also looted the land mortgage papers of the peasants from the interest - mongering Marwari Mahajans.
Non co-operation movement and Assam: Leaders like Nabin Chandra Bordoloi ,Tarun Ram Phukan ,Chandranath Sharma actively participated in this moment. Assam participated in the National Congress held at Kolkata where Debi Charan Barua, Gopinath Bardoloi, Kamini Kumar Chandra ,Bipin Chandra Pal ,Satyanath Baruah and Joy Govinda Som represented Assam.
Civil disobedience movement and Assam: In 1930 Civil disobedience was launched by Gandhiji and Assam too actively participated into it. Leathers like Hemchandra Barua ,Bishnu Ram Medhi, Omeo Kumar Das courted imprisonment.
In 1935 self governance in Assam was introduced.in the elections held in 1937 the Congress was able to secure the maximum seat but they were not able to get a majority. So, the leader of Muslim League Sir Mohammad Saadulla formed the first Council of Ministers after securing the approval of other parties.
Quit India Movement and Assam :1942 was the year of the historic Quit India Movement.in Assam Leathers like Jyoti Prasad Agarwala ,Gopinath Bardoloi, Siddhnath Sharma, Mohammad Tayebullah, Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed ,Bishnu Ram Medhi were the leaders of this movement.
There were many people who laid down their lives for the sake of freedom of India. They are the people like Bhogeswari Phukanani, Kanaklata Barua ,Lakshmiram Hazarika, Thogiram Sut, Baloram Sut, Mukunda Kakati,Routa Kachari, Madan Barman etc. Almost 30,500 people were arrested.
