 Lachit Borphukan was an Ahom warrior who stopped the eastward expansion of Mughal Empire. He was a general of the Ahom Kingdom. He fought with the Mughals and also defeated them.




Born : 24  November ,1622.

Place of Birth : Charaideo , Assam .

Father : Momai Tamuli Borbarua

Mother : Kunti Moran.

Background: Sukapha, the ancestor of Bir Lachit, established the Ahom dynasty in 1228 in Assam. The father of Lachit Borphukan, Momai Tamuli Borbarua was the commander - in - chief of the Ahom Army. Momai Tamuli Borbarua was the first Borbarua of Ahom dynasty under Pratap Singha. Barbarua introduced the paik system .


            Lachit Borphukan completed his education in humanities and military strategies. He was guided by a domestic teacher. He got education in the subject of Ahom Scripture , Hindu religion, Economics etc .


            Later, he was appointed as 'Commander - in - Chief.'




Battle of Saraighat and the contribution of Lachit Borphukan:


 Lachit Borphukan was a great warrior of Ahom dynasty. After taking the charge as Commander - in - Chief , he took participation on the battles with Mughals.


             The battle of Saraighat was fought between the Mughal Empire and the Ahom kingdom , on March 1671. The senapati of Ahom was Lachit Barphukan and the senapati of Mughals was Ram Singh. At this battle , the soldiers of Ahom was able to defeat the Mughals. During this battle , he said ' My uncle is not greater than my motherland'.



Conclusion: Lachit Borphukan is a symbol of indomitable courage. He was a strong , selfless and courageous warrior. The courage and foresight of leadership of Lachit Borphukan is trilled in every Assamese mind. The best passing out cadet of Indian National Defence Academy ( NDA) is conferred by Lachit Borphukan Gold Medal every year since 1999.
